With a variety of recycling and reuse options available, think before disposing during your spring clean.
In case you’re planning a spring clean to spruce up your private home, apartment, or townhouse there are several resources available to make it easier to minimise your waste.
ACT recycling fast facts:
- Around 250 tonnes of recycling from the ACT and our surrounding councils are sorted every day on the Materials Recovery Facility in Hume
- 12% of a mean landfill household bin are items that would have been recycled

Furniture and hulking waste
Whether you’re clearing out the garage, shed or opening up your living areas, there’s probably some furniture you’d wish to get rid of. Be sure you think about these options:
- Items in a reusable condition will be dropped off at no cost at The Green Shed (conditions apply).
- You may sell items on an internet marketplace.
- Book a free bulky waste collection. Canberrans are entitled to 1 free roadside bulky waste booking annually.
- Disposing of an old mattress? Drop it off at Soft Landing in Hume. Fees apply.
Electronics
Disposing of a spare TV, computer, printer, modem, phone or other electronic device? If working, these things will be used again. If not, electronics are stuffed with recyclable materials. Take a take a look at these options:

Clothing, blankets and fabrics
In case you’re cleansing out the wardrobe, consider donating, selling, swapping and reusing before disposing of clothes and garments.
- Sell items on an internet marketplace.
- Donate to businesses or charities equivalent to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, One other Likelihood, GIVIT or Koomarri Cut Cloth.
- Drop it off at no cost at The Green Shed.
Hazardous waste – Cleansing products, oils paint and batteries
It’s essential not to position hazardous waste in your kerbside wheelie bins or put them down the drain as they’re harmful to the environment.
Hazardous waste, including cleansing products, paints, pesticides, batteries, poisons, pool chemicals, gas bottles and oil, will be dropped off at no cost at a Resource Management Centre.

Paper, cardboard, glass bottles, aluminium and steel cans
The ACT has five recycling drop-off centres where you’ll be able to recycle excess empty household containers and packaging at no cost. The centres are open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

You too can drop off eligible bottles, cans and cartons to earn 10 cents per item with the Container Deposit Scheme. There’s 19 return points across the ACT.
